Frequently Asked Questions

"What is The BMW MOA Foundation?"
The BMW MOA (Motorcycle Owners of America) Foundation is a non-profit Public Educational Foundation that meets IRS 501(c)(3) requirements. The Foundation's purpose is to carry out educational activities that benefit the BMW motorcycle community, and all motorcycle enthusiasts in general.

"Why was the BMW MOA Foundation formed?"
Motorcycle riding has transformed the lives of many. The people, the machines, and the self-discoveries are all without comparison. The BMW MOA Foundation was formed so that people would have the chance to give back to a sport and lifestyle which has given them so much.

"What will the BMW MOA Foundation do?"
We plan to achieve a variety of goals. Educational activities to be carried out by the Foundation include programs such as: rider safety, youth involvement in motorcycling, advocacy for women riders, families and other under-represented riding groups, technical training opportunities, and other beneficial initiatives that are compatible with our mission.
A long term goal of The Foundation is to create the Riders International Destination for Education. The RIDE Center is to serve as a central location to provide educational opportunities for interested motorcyclists that celebrates the heritage of BMW motorcycles and the riding culture. This educational and training facility, will include a museum, archives, technical training center, rider training facilities, and other related services that furthers the experience and skill development of responsible motorcycle riding.

"How is BMW MOA Foundation structured?"
The Board of Directors and Executive Committee determine the direction and policies of the Foundation.  Additionally, the Foundation is served by up to 100 Advisors who were instrumental in the creation of the Foundation, and were previously referred to as “Trustees.”  Together, they represent various segments of the motorcycling populace and specifically, members of the BMW riding community at large. Through the leadership and the Advisors, we can better disseminate and gather information concerning the Foundation over a wide area. Thus, we're able to listen to a broad range of rider input

"How do I become involved?"
The Board of the Foundation is actively seeking constructive input. You are encouraged to contribute ideas, concerns, and suggestions to any of the Board members or Advisors. In addition, since the Board will, by design, have openings every year, new volunteers are needed all the time. If you're interested in becoming a part of this unique organization, please submit a letter of interest or contact the Foundation.

"Are my donations tax deductible?"
Yes! All donations are tax deductible as 501(c)(3) donations. Giving to the BMW MOA Foundation has all the same tax benefits as a donation to a church, university, or other not-for-profit institution. Individuals, businesses, clubs, and other organizations may make donations that will go toward the development of programs geared specifically toward responsible motorcycle riding.

"Where do my donations go?"
Donations may be directed toward Programs, or directed for the general use of the Foundation. Because The Foundation is made up entirely of enthusiastic unpaid volunteers, very little goes toward overhead. Donations may be of two types:

  1. UNRESTRICTED DONATIONS: Any general donation, whether it be a direct or deferred gift, will be directed to the general fund. These funds will be used to support activities as designated by the Board and Executive Committee.

(For example, a person may designate in their will that 25% of their assets will be given to the Foundation. At the time of their death those funds would be sent to the general fund of the Foundation and would be distributed to support current activities.)

  1. DESIGNATED RESTRICTED DONATIONS: At the time of a donation, whether it be a direct or deferred gift, the donor may designate funds directly to specific projects. Funds donated would then be directed exclusively toward this project. Additionally, they may also propose a new project, which would need to be reviewed and approved by the Board and Executive Committee, prior to acceptance.

(For example, a person may direct their donation specifically towards the support of an existing project like Experienced Rider Courses, or toward the RIDE Center. Or, they may propose a new project - like the display of a vintage motorcycle collection. )

"How can I make a donation to the BMW MOA Foundation?"
Simply contact any Board member, or the BMW MOA Headquarters, who will direct you to a Board member.   Direct payment, credit card payment, monthly or annual pledges, and deferred gifts through estate planning are accepted. You will then receive a receipt for your donation. Contact information is listed below.

"Can the BMW MOA Foundation accept gifts that are not monetary?"
Yes, Real or Personal property (land, their home, motorcycles, equipment, etc) are welcome. In this way, most people can support the goals of The Foundation in some fashion. Simply contact the Foundation and describe what you are considering donating. The Foundation will then determine how best to accommodate this donation, in a manner that is acceptable and beneficial to both you, the Donor, and the Foundation.

"Are brands other than BMW Motorcycles welcome?"
ABSOLUTELY! Any motorcycle enthusiast who is interested in responsible riding is welcome, regardless of make or model motorcycle.

"I have an idea for a project. What do I do next?"
Submit your idea to The Foundation. The more detailed the description (goals, time frame, budget, and responsibilities) the better. We will contact you for more information or a decision regarding your proposed program.

"What is the relationship of BMW MOA Foundation to the BMW MOA?"
The BMW MOA Foundation exists as a financially independent organization from the BMW MOA.  Under the provisions of the Amended By-Laws, the BMW MOA’s Board of Directors may appoint up to five (5) members of the Foundation’s Board. In this way, both organizations are able to serve motorcyclists in different capacities and may choose to work in a cooperative fashion to achieve common goals.

"What is the relationship of the BMW MOA Foundation to BMW Motorrad?"
None. However, BMW Motorrad is very supportive of the goals of the BMW MOA Foundation. Not surprisingly, their motorcycles are pretty popular among those interested in the work of the Foundation!

"How is the BMW MOA Foundation different than the AMA?"
Both organizations are 501(c)(3) organizations and are able to accept donations. The biggest differences are that the BMW MOA Foundation:

  1. Does not engage in lobbying or political activity.
  2. Does not attempt to represent all motorcyclists, although ALL motorcycle enthusiasts’ concerns and needs may be considered and addressed by the Foundation, but rather the Foundation is engaged in furthering the values of safety, education, adventure, and global citizenry as is evident throughout much of the BMW riding community and other members of the motorcycling community with similar values.
